Law Enforcement
Should a critical incident occur at a local school
We didn't realize the extent of the community expectations. This is typically the first statement made internally by law enforcement after experiencing an active shooter incident and facing both media and community scrutiny. Even after incidents are successfully resolved, law enforcement has unexpectedly learned that they were perceived as having "run over" the school community, resulting in a lingering atmosphere of distrust.
Code Red Protocols were developed after extensive armed intruder/terrorist simulations and actual incident debriefs. The training was developed specifically as a companion component to law enforcement's Active Shooter procedures in order to provide a clear playing field for law enforcement while protecting classroom needs.
Law Enforcement has learned...
- law enforcement expectations don't always fit into classroom realities.
- educators speak their own language, so the most successful training is having an experienced educator co-present with an SRO.
- law enforcement must take an active role in conducting Code Red Drills.
- trained schools respond quickly to critical incidents, allowing law enforcement to successfully resolve situations without hysterical students and staff.
- having partnerships with schools allows for a united front with the media and the community.
- Code Red training and drills create relationships that enhance prevention activities.
